WILLCO recently completed remodeling an historic Portland home in NW Portland’s alphabet district. An important feature of this project was maintaining the historical character of the home while updating the home’s layout and features to better accommodate a 21st century lifestyle. Many homes built in the early 1900s had a more crowded layout and take more effort to modernize. We completed renovation of the entire living space, building a new kitchen that blends modern design and convenience with the historical character of the home.
With an emphasis on historical accuracy and preservation, WILLCO’s design included reusing many of the original materials from the home. Our team knew that this project required attention to detail; our skilled craftsmen were careful to preserve historic materials, hardware and fixtures during all phases of construction. We were able to integrate the home’s original trim and molding throughout the design, preserving the history and charm of the space. Each room in the new layout features historical elements from the original home.
The improved layout allowed us to move the bathroom and create a larger, more inviting space with a walk in shower. The bathroom was built to ADA standards and features simple furnishings and period appropriate colors that match the character of the original home. WILLCO also moved and rebuilt stairs within the new layout of the footprint. They are now up to code and provide safe accessibility to the basement.
Ever sensitive to the nature of working with historical homes, this renovation is a balance between historical accuracy and the desired function of a modern home. WILLCO appreciates our client’s trust when it came time to update and renovate her historical home. We are proud of the quality craftsmanship and to present our client with a functional space which she can enjoy for many years to come.
